N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMp) is a solvent with high chemical and thermal stability and is miscible with water at all temperatures. It has good solvency for a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds and is a powerful solvent with broad solubility for resins. NMp has a boiling point of 202 °C and is thermally stable, making it an attractive solubility enhancer in the pharmaceutical field. Some marketed products containing NMp include Atridox® gel (for humans), and Nuflor® IV.
NMp is a colorless to slightly yellow liquid that is heavier than water. It has a flashpoint of 199°F, and is normally stable, even under fire conditions. However, it significantly decomposes when heated to a temperature at or above about 700° F.
NMp has good chemical stability and thermal stability thanks to its high velocity, low volatility, and low toxicity. It can serve as a co-solvent with water, alcohols, glycol ethers, ketones, and aromatic/chlorinated hydrocarbons.
